Lam Chih Bing recorded a popular breakthrough victory in the Volvo Masters of Asia in 2008 at Thai Country Club for his first victory on the Asian Tour.
The tournament was the season-ending Tour Championship on the Asian Tour and Lam beat a stellar field. He was among a five-way tie for the third round lead before shooting a flawless five-under-par 67 on the last day to triumph by two strokes.
It was the culmination of an outstanding season which had seen him start by winning the Singapore PGA Championship and then the Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia – the season-opening event on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.
The athletic golfer also qualified to play in the Open Championship for the second time in his career. He played all four rounds to become the first Singaporean to achieve the feat. He also played in the Open in 2007.
He has played in the World Cup three times with compatriot Mardan Mamat – in 2002, 2005 and 2006.
For many years Lam amazed galleries with the enormous distances he drove the golf ball. As his career has progressed he has learned how to harness this raw natural talent in order to become one of Asia’s top golfers.
The Singaporean picked up golf from his parents at Singapore Island Country Club. He attended college in the United States where he graduated with a Business Management degree.
