Mardan Shows His Steel in Malaysia

August 18, Kuala Lumpur: Singapore’s Mardan Mamat drew upon his vast experience in the game to take the first round lead in the Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia today with a six-under-par 66 despite having to play while fasting.


Thailand’s Pariya Junhasavasdikul finished the day in second place with a 68 at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club while his compatriot Pornpong Phatlum carded a 69.


Mamat, aged 42, is well known for being a player who can still play at his best during the month of  Ramadan - the Islamic month of fasting, in which Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset.


He recorded a bogey free round and made birdies on holes 1, 3 and 5 while on the homeward stretch shots birdies on 12, 13 and 16.

Open Hero Chia Leads Local Challenge

August 17, Kuala Lumpur:  Malaysia’s top golfer Danny Chia headlines a strong field in the Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia which tees-off tomorrow at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club.

Chia hit the headlines last month for becoming the first Malaysian to play all four rounds in the Open Championship and is bidding to win his third title on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.

He is part of a strong local challenge that includes the in-form S. Sivachandran, Airil Rizman and the rising star from Sabah Nicholas Fung.

Since returning from his memorable performance at St Andrews Chia has been nursing a bad back but is eager to kick start a strong second half of the season.

Dominant Chawalit Conquers Mercedes-Benz Masters

Singapore, August 14: Chawalit Plaphol cruised to a wire-to-wire victory in the US$60,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Singapore today at Laguna National Golf and Country Club.


The sweet swinging Thai fired a final round two-under-par 70 to win by five shots from his teenage compatriot Panuphol Pittayarat  and Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing.


Panuphol carded a 69 and at the age of 17 showed that he is one of the most exciting young golfers in the region.


Lam, who was also second in this event in 2008 and fifth last year, shot a 66.

Chawalit on a mission

Singapore, August 13: Thailand’s Chawalit Plaphol increased his lead in the US$60,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Singapore to six shots after shooting his best round of the week with a six-under-par 66.


He moved to an impressive 15-under-par 201 for three rounds at Laguna National Golf and Country Club and is well placed to secure his second Mercedes-Benz Tour title of the year.


His compatriot Panuphol Pittayarat, aged 17, is in second place after also carding a 66.


Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing stormed back into contention with a 65 and is tied for third with his compatriot and defending champion Mardan Mamat, Singapore-based Australian Scott Barr and Thailand’s Pavit Tangkamolprasert. They are nine shots behind Chawalit.

Plaphol Leads at Laguna

Singapore, August 12: Chawalit Plaphol asserted his authority on the US$60,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Singapore today with a four-under-par 68 for a two shot lead at the halfway mark.


His bogey free round at Laguna National Golf and Country Club moved him to nine-under-par 135 for the Mercedes-Benz Tour event.


Singapore-based Australian Scott Barr is in second place after shooting a 67, while veteran Zaw Moe from Myanmar is another two strokes back.

Moe, the 43 year old who has also made Singapore his home for a long time, fired a 69.
